HR Hotline: Should I include my GPA on my resume?

Today’s question is one I hear very frequently: “Should I include my GPA on my resume?”


Unless you’re a college student or a recent grad, take your GPA off your resume. For someone with a short work history, a GPA can be an indicator of your ability to learn new skills on the job. If you’ve been working for a while, your work history will demonstrate your knowledge and skills.


If your GPA is low, don’t include it, regardless of how much experience you have. Instead, highlight relevant coursework, extracurricular activities, or other positive information.


As always, carefully read any job posting you apply for. I had been out of college for a few years when I applied to a job that required a GPA and college transcripts, even for experienced hires. I added my GPA to my resume to apply for this particular job, even though I normally would have omitted it.
